On the Chase specifically, Northerners when asked which chaser they want to meet, say Jenny - because she's a northern lass.  I've never heard anyone say Darragh, because he's Irish, or The Beast because he's from the West country, or Ann because she's a Londoner.  Similarly on Gogglebox, Pete 'and his little sister Sophie', often talk about Northerners - even to saying making a cup of tea in a disaster is 'the Northern way'. No it isn't.  Most of us do that.   What is it with Northerners?

Yes it were Naomi, sorry for side stepping a bit, and a big fan of gogglebox. I didn't know they get to choose which chaser etc...

Question Author

They don't get to choose chasers, arky, but Brad often asks which one they would prefer.

Yes that's what i thought...but I'm a northerner what Do I know...I'm not mentioning scousers. enigma to themselves that lot.

Naomi/ I have noticed that some do say they would prefer Jenny because she is from Bolton (from their own area) but others probably select her just because they like her irrespective of where she is from.  I like Shaun, he's a Londoner and I'm from🏴󠁧󠁒󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Pasta, Sorry, but when people as above, talk about 'Londoners' I wonder do they know what they mean?

'out of all regions, London had the smallest percentage of people who identified as white British, (36%)  and the North East and Wales had the largest percentage'

Londoners know what they mean - and so do you, khandro.  This is a natter in Chatterbank - not a party political broadcast.

I'm a midlander so best of both worlds.

OH's son, J, came up from Devon with his partner and another family member for OH's recent funeral. They'd never stayed up here longer than a day spent with us before they  went back, Down South.

J was pensive before they left this time, after 3 days, and said that they'd all been wondering why OH, born in Kent and associated with Devon, had chosen to settle in a Yorkshire village.  After the funeral, he understood. J said "You are a community, you look out for each other; everyone knows everyone else at least by sight.  Dad tried to explain this, but I can feel it now."

He added that it was very different 'down South' even though he and the family had been there for over 50 years.

It isn't that there aren't communities in the South - just that it's different here; perhaps we are more communicative and unworried by making contact?

I've probably not explained this properly and I'm sure there are great groupings  etc. in the South - but it's maybe more obvious to the outsider here?

Don't shoot me down - I'm not claiming superiority, just trying to explain.

eh now no!

The next question logically is what does one consider a 'northerner' I suppose. Being born and brought up on the south coast means I consider most people northern to me.

I think of the north as starting at Birmingham but my Brummie friends tell me they're not northerners.

I get the impression that some have enormous chips on their shoulders and actually create the so-called north/south divide

You too, eh?

The northernmost London Underground station is Chesham, located on the Metropolitan line. It is also the furthest station from central London, situated 25 miles (40 km) northwest of Charing Cross.

Northern England is anything north of that - & all the better for it.  πŸ™‚

Jourdain, I think what you're talking about is the difference between living in a large community or a small one.  Villages here in the south are just as supportive and caring as the one you describe.
