Isn't It Outrageous That A Hospital In...

Middle of the night lastnight- about 3am- I could hear this strange noise - not a howling, but almost a wailing noise. Couldn't figure out what it was, looked out of bedroom window to see a fox laying down on the pavement outside, under a tree, & looking up at the house (could have been looking up at either mine or nxt door). This noise went on for at least 10 mins, & I was deciding that it must be injured & unable to move, & figuring out what on earth to do, when in the distance to the right a car started driving up the road. As it's headlights got closer to the fox it got up & walked into nxt doors driveway, out of sight. Then as soon as the car passed by it walked straight back out, lay back down on the pavement & started 'crying' again. I couldnt just stand there looking at it all night so I eventually went back to bed, & after a while it stopped. I went & looked again & it was gone. But I've been thinking about it all day. Why did it do that? Was it lost & calling for a mate? Was it in pain? Just seemed so odd to lay down on the pavement like that - I don't live anywhere rural, I live in a town. Don't even know if it was male or female. But I just felt so sad looking at it laying there making that noise.
