Quicksilver

I know the first word means, "silver" but I was confused still and then twigged mercury is a silvery colour.

If you happen to know a bit Latin and are under no time restraints, it's not so bad but even then I didn't see it immediately.

I wouldn't expect people who've never done Latin to know Latin.  Likewise binary.

What about.

Q: What day of the week is mentioned more than 200 times in Treasure Island.

A Monday.

Question Author

17:59 yes that was a contender today!

I must say I've never seen its Latin name before - its chemical symbol Hg is based on its Greek name. The "argentum" bit threw me and, had it been an option, I would have gone for silver. I've never watched The Chase, so I've no idea how much time to think you've got.

Argentina=silvery

webbo3 17:59

I don't know the answer to that. But if the book was Robinson Crusoe then I would of course.

What is the answer for Treasure Island ?

BHG, "Four strangers work as a team to answer general knowledge questions. They must defeat the Chaser, a ruthless quiz genius, in order to win money."

When facing the Chaser, the contestant and Chaser have no time limit until one of them makes a choice and then the other must select an answer within five seconds.

The name means living silver but people who don't know Latin can't be expected to know that.  It was given that name due to the fact that it's liquid at room temperature.  I googled the last bit.

Canary @18:21 thats what I meant...lol

That's why knowing latin is is more useful than many on here seem to think.

I think this is an unfair TWAU, many many people don't speak Latin. Therefore to know the answer is unlikely.

It's brainless to ridicule people who can't answer questions on specialised subjects.  That's not general knowledge and their answers are not stupid.   If they've not been taught they can't know.

TCL - thanks for that. 5 seconds would probably make me panic so I could well star on here if ever I took part.

Question Author

"If they've not been taught they can't know.  " - self education is allowed!

mercury & bromine are the only elements that are liquid at room temperature 🙄

Give over, TTT.  If you're going to post TWAU, make them count for what they're intended and then people will laugh along with them. Really silly answers like Naomi Campbell being a bird with a long neck is a proper TWAU - not this big-headed twaddle.

Question Author

18:46 steady on dave people might learn things that have not been officially taught to them!

Question Author

18:50 everyone knows argent = silver that's why gold is a silly answer.

so from what you said: "If they've not been taught they can't know.  " - you have no knowledge that you acquired yourself? seems very insular.
