I cant relate to it, nobody can. I know what they are but when someone says 1.75m tall and weighs 101.6 kg, it means nothing. Tell me they are 5ft 9 and 16 stone, instantly I can tell they are overweight. They'll be tell us fuel consumption in km/litre next.

Like in the UK where fuel is sold and pricex by the litre but cars are rated by mpg

they are rated in anything you like barry. MPG is just what we choose to use but we could use AU per Pipe if we wanted. It's just arithmetic.

Personally fuel is so cheap I just fill the jaaaag up with E5 when it needs it.

No, fuel isn't cheap.

I was taught both at school... still stones and lbs to me.

I remember our dear departed Cupid04 once quipped whilst standing on a talking weighing scale it said...

"One at a time please."

It's an age thing I think - I'm 84.

That makes you 125 in metric years, hellywelly

At school in the 50s and early 60s.  Never heard of metric back then and am really not interested now.  I'm 5'2, weigh 9st 10lbs (maybe could lose a few lbs), wear size 5 shoes and size 10/12 clothes.  Sorted.

It amuses me how little Hectare is used in area measurements. In nearly all cases area is quoted in football pitches or Wales and length in buses. As a point of interest a football pitch does not have a fixed width or length, just minimum and maximum values so the can be a factor 3 between the smallest and largest pitches.

Indeed and the penalty spot is still 12 yards.

schools probably only teach metric now so younger folks won't have a clue about feet & inches.

I believe rod/pole/perch/chain/furlong & pounds/ounces/cwt/ton are also on the way out. 🤣

Those horse-racing chappies still use furlongs for length and hands for the height of their horses, not to mention guineas for the price of them.

you'll still need to know chains for watching cricket and welters for watching boxing.

jno how long is a run in cricket?

20.1168 metres, apparently. Surveyors used to have actual chains, standardised at 22 yards. (Maybe they still do.)

That's an interesting question because the batters can be almost anywhere on the pitch for the first run (both can be out of their crease) but all subsequent runs must be 58ft or more (distance between popping creases).

yes, I was just thinking about that. Batters risk being out stumped if they're outside the crease; the non-facing batter risks being Mankadded if he's outside his.  But they only have to reach the bowling crease at the other end, which is 17 inches from the stumps.

jno , not 22 yds, bhg is correct, they can actually run ans far as they like but they must clear the 2 lines 4ft in from each set pof stumps so a run is actually 58ft. The distance between the stumps is a chain or 22 yds

As long as I know I'm not too fat on a given day I really don't bather with it all.

Life's too short in yards, metres or light years.

they don't even have to run that - they just have to touch their bat down. Plenty of instances of tall batters not getting there but being okay because they've got the bat at full length in front of them reaching the crease.

a batter caused some hilarity the other day when his phone fell out of his pocket as he turned for a second run. I wondered if he was counting his steps.

I wouldn't bother. If it ain't in the proper British imperial units I learnt at school, I'd not use the site.
